"But I would be proud to partake of your Pecan Pie"

I was just getting out my ingredients to make pecan pie and I knew I had a bunch of Karo syrup. It's one of those items like vanilla extract or lemon juice that you're never sure if you have enough so you buy another bottle. And you never really think any of those things expire. Well, I found four bottles of Karo syrup so I thought I was golden. Then I checked the expiration date...

My first clue should have been that the bottle was from Harris Teeter, which is nowhere to be found in the state of Florida so it had to have been from North Carolina. (We've been in Florida 2 1/2 years now). Upon further inspection I saw that the expiration date was October 31, 2000! Yes, that's not a typo. 2000. What happened in the year 2000? Ian and I got married, we moved into our first apartment, I probably made my first pecan pie. Seriously, that bottle has seen some highway. It's taken up residence with us in four different houses. Awesome.

I thought about framing it in a shadow box or something to remind us of the sweetness of our young love in 2000. No, I didn't think that at all. I just laughed and knew I needed to call my mom because that's something that would happen to her too (sorry mom, but we know it's true).

The moral of the story is, when in doubt just go ahead and buy a fresh bottle of syrup/vanilla/lemon juice...or don't and take a trip down memory lane with your expired bottles of goodies.

At our family Thanksgiving in Atlanta last week I opened a box of Corn Flakes, poured me a bowl, and dug in. Thinking they tasted...wrong...I checked the box. Not only were they Corn Flakes from 2004, but they were a commemorative OLYMPICS box of cereal. Lesson learned: don't store your EDIBLE collectables in the PANTRY.
